Welcome to Oak Class – Reception and Year 1
We enjoy learning across all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Year 1 Curriculum. Our learning is creative and cross- curricular, linked to termly topics.
We have a large and well resourced classroom. A fabulous brand new outdoor learning area with free flow access from the classroom was added in September and is instantly enriching the children’s opportunities for learning.
In Reception Year children follow the Early Years Curriculum. This Curriculum covers 7 areas of learning and development. These areas are broken down into various aspects.
|Area of Learning and Development||Aspect|
|Personal, Social and Emotional Development||Making relationships|
|Self-confidence and self-awareness|
|Managing feelings and behavior|
|Physical Development||Moving and handling|
|Health and self-care|
|Communication and Language||Listening and attention|
|Shape, space and measure|
|Understanding the World||People and communities|
|Expressive Arts and Design||Exploring and using media and materials|
The Prime Areas are of primary importance as they impact on all the Specific areas and lay the building blocks for children’s development as successful learners. Through a range of practical activities, active and purposeful play and talk, pupils develop important social, emotional and communication skills and other basic concepts needed for their later learning.
We provide a rich and stimulating environment using both our indoor and outdoor areas. A balance of child initiated (free choice) activities and those planned or led by adults are offered.
We link the 7 Areas of Learning through a Topic that changes each term and develops according to the children’s emerging interests. To bring our Topic to life we often have guest speakers and also arrange off site trips.
First and foremost we aim to support children to feel safe and happy at school. Reception children are allocated a Year 6 ‘Buddy’ who looks after them. We also regularly work together with the children in Owls Class, thus ensuring a smooth transition to Year 1 and Year 2. We work in close partnership with families, valuing the enormous contribution that parents and carers make in supporting their children’s learning at home.
